More about eastern Coldwater:
This part of Coldwater is now the prime shopping area for the city,
with "big box stores" like Wal-Mart, Meijer, and
Home Depot,
major chain restaurants, major chain hotels, and several outdoor strip
malls. When the city welcomed the arrival of Wal-Mart in 1990,
Coldwater entered the modern shopping era and was very quickly
transformed. The prime shopping district shifted from the north part of the city to the east as other
businesses flocked to the new area with Wal-Mart as the anchor. The
location next to the prime Interstate interchange also made this area
ideal for attracting new business. Wal-Mart continued its investment in
the area with its building of a huge distribution center three miles to
the north in 1997, and with a relocation of its original store and a
conversion to a SuperCenter with groceries in 2000. Wal-Mart is now the
largest employer in the county. Local residents continue to flock to
eastern Coldwater to find huge varieties of goods for sale at low
prices.
